North Myrtle Beach is home to Vanna White, and the birth place of South
Carolina’s state dance, the shag. Locals are keen to teaching newcomers
the intricate footwork at many of the area shagging clubs.
The city consists of four sections from north to south: Cherry Grove,
Ocean Drive, Crescent Beach, and Windy Hill. In 1968, these formerly
separate municipalities were combined into the single town of North
Myrtle Beach, with Atlantic Beach choosing to remain independent. Not
content to stay in the shadow of its neighbor to the south, North Myrtle
Beach has spent heavily to attract more business and tourism over the
last 10 years, and the city’s population has almost doubled as a result.
The wide-open beaches and pristine marshes of Cherry Grove make North
Myrtle Beach a favorite of visitors and locals.
There is something for everyone: the beach bum, the boater, the hunter,
the fisherman, the retiree, the shopper, the shagger, and the
international traveler!

Visitors to the quiet little beach town of Cherry Grove Beach South
Carolina in the 1950's were greeted with the scene like the
ones on the website after crossing the "swing bridge", where
King's Highway (Highway 17) South branched off of Sea Mountain
Highway, the access road to Cherry Grove.

Fishing Tips:
Summer Trout
These fighters prefer light tackle and artificial lures around the inlets, or shrimp
from the fishing piers. In residence April through November. A fine delicate-tasting
fish. Croaker, Bluefish, Whiting: Try bait fishing in surf or from piers with light spinning
or conventional tackle. Almost anywhere will do along the coast. March through November.
Black Sea Bass, Red & Silver Snapper, Grouper
Ocean bottom fishing with medium tackle will bring in your catch. A fathometer will aid in finding the crevasses
and ledges, or leave it to the experience of the charter boats of Little River and North Myrtle Beach. Great
fishing spring, summer, and fall.
King Mackerel
You'll find plenty trolling 2-40 miles offshore with medium tackle(heavy tackle to avoid fishing
stories). Non-stop fishing March through November. Good Eating!
Spots
Try still fishing on the bottom with bloodworms or shrimp from the Fishing Pier or in the Cherry
Grove tidal marshes. Use light tackle, size 6 hooks. In the fall, spots are caught by the hundreds
off the Cherry Grove Pier.
Flounder
Best Caught trolling from a small boat or fishing from the bank with the tide running. Use light line.
Live minnows are the best. They 're waiting in the shallow water of Cherry Grove tidal marshes. Also,
you'll find pier fishing is good with live mullet in the summer.

Pompano
Bottom Fishing with shrimp from the pier or cast into the surf from the beach. Use light tackle,
look for schools. Late in the summer and early fall.
Spottails or Channel Bass
Surfcasting produces best results with spinning or conventional tackle. However, many are caught in the
tidal salt marshes. Spring or fall is the best time for these popular fish.
Boats
There are numerous boats offering private charters; also boats that take out deep-sea fishing
parties in large groups. The majority of these are in Murrells Inlet and in Little River.
Cherry Grove Boat Ramp
Located at 53rd Ave. North in the Cherry Grove Section of North Myrtle Beach, this new boat
ramp gives easy access to fishing, shrimping, and crabbing in the Cherry Grove tidal marshes.

Cherry Grove Boat Ramp (Access to Marsh and Ocean) - 53rd Ave North
This Boat Ramp has boat/trailer parking, a double boat ramp, fishing pier, dock and restrooms
Russell Burgess Coastal Preserve – provides recreational access to the Cherry Grove marsh is located at the corner of Duffy Street and 36 th Avenue North in North Myrtle Beach, is named in honor of former North Myrtle Beach City Council member Russell Burgess. The Burgess Preserve is a popular access point for fisherman and crabbers wishing to partake of the bounty of the Cherry Grove Marsh. Future improvements to the park will include an elevated boardwalk/observation deck that will extend out into the marsh.
Heritage Shores Nature Preserve – located in the Cherry Grove section of North Myrtle Beach, just off Heritage Drive. Walkways with interpretive signs will lead you through the park, and lookout decks are also located along the marsh. Visitors will also be able to take leisurely strolls through this natural area, and two shelters will be available for picnic lunches. You will also be able to access this park by water and leave your boat, canoe or kayak by the dock while you spend some time enjoying the natural beauty of this area. |
